Simmonds wins silver at the African Games
The goal was to come out with a gold medal, but unfortunately I fell one step short
South Africa’s leading women’s player from Kempton Park Chanel Simmonds clinched a silver medal after going down in the women’s singles final at the African Games in Rabat on Thursday.
Simmonds was denied the title by Egyptian top seed Maier Sherif 6-3, 6-3.
The on-form 27-year-old reached the finals of this prestigious African event without dropping a set.
She appeared to have the contest under control but had no answer when the Egyptian stepped up the pressure in the second set.
“The goal was to come out with a gold medal, but unfortunately I fell one step short. It was a great experience for me to participate in an event like this. It’s always special for me to represent South Africa,” commented Simmonds.
