Top due flies high with 11 birdies, one eagle

The stage was set for Makume and Matojane to learn from the marvels of Mazibuko.

Eleven birdies and an eagle at the par 5 eighth hole saw Nzima Tsotetsi and Jerry Mosia of Tembisa Golf Club destroy the daunting Kempton Park Country Club layout on Sunday.

In hindsight it could be said that it was to be expected, as Tsotetsi and Mosia were 2016 and 2017 club champions respectively.

Starting on the first tee, the pair fired five birdies on the trot from the first hole, courtesy of a chip in on the difficult fourth. Playing alongside the pair of club captain Themba Mazibuko and Bernstein Ndlovu, the pair proved just why they hade become club champions in the past when they eagled the eighth to finish on a seven under par 29 for their first nine holes.

Their great exploit continued on the second nine. After parring the 10th and 11th, they made four birdies on the trot. A final birdie on the 18th saw them conclude a sterling 12 under par gross total to lift the trophy in the second major of Tembisa Golf Club – the coveted American Scramble competition.

Second were Sello Mashego and Stanley Nkosi, who were the early leaders.

Lebo Makume, partnering with dad Bennie Makume, took third place.

The American scramble is one of the major events of Tembisa Golf Club and was well attended by golfers who were all hoping for the trophy. Last year’s defending champions, Mporo Mathiyase and Tana Mowelo, had their partnership devoured and had to play with new partners, only to be left cold and dry by the field.

The club now focuses on the forthcoming Ebuhleni Open, dubbed the Tembisa Open, on September 22. The competition will be sponsored by ATA Capital.

Maredi Mampuru has confirmed their commitment to this year’s event.

Makhetha Mazibuko won the individual medal competition the club hosted at ERPM on September 1.
