Edleen brothers bag medals at karate tournament
Edleen siblings have been selected to represent Gauteng at South African Goju Kai nationals.
Edleen brothers Arnoldus (12) and Stefan (8) van der Merwe were among the four members of Goju Kai Founders Hill Karate School who won medals at the Karate South Africa National All-Styles Development Championships in Durban in August.
The siblings are karatekas at the dojo that is based in Modderfontein.
Arnoldus won a gold medal in the boys’ 12-13 years less than 55kg fighting division, while his brother bagged a silver medal in the boys’ eight to nine years over 30kg fighting division.
“The brothers, together with club members Gabriella Toweel (8) and Mathew Soares (10), have been selected to represent the Gauteng Goju Kai provincial team that will compete at the South African Goju Kai nationals,” said the club’s sensei Russell Sim.
“The nationals will be held in Port Elizabeth at the end of September and I believe they will do really well.”
Sim also said the national development championship is designed to nurture new, up-and-coming karate talent in order to improve their skills and ultimately gain entry into the elite divisions of Karate South Africa.
