Free ice hockey session for girls next weekend

Entrance to the World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend will be free on October 6.

Girls of all ages in Kempton Park are urged to attend the World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend on October 6 at Festival Mall’s ice rink.

With no experience required, attendees who wish to participate are urged to bring a bicycle helmet, gloves, thick socks, comfortable clothes and shoes, in case the hosts do not have enough in stock.

According to event organiser Michelle Gibson: “It is an opportunity for girls of all ages to try ice hockey. We are looking for hosts all around the world to bring girls from their community together on the ice so they can be introduced to basic skills in hockey in a positive, fun and safe environment.

“The goal is for girls to learn about opportunities in ice hockey in their community, learn about fair play, sportsmanship, teamwork, and to meet new friends and have a chance to fall in love with a new sport.”

Gauteng Ice Hockey Association will host this event with Festival Mall as the co-host and Panarottis and Voilà as sponsors.

Registration is from 7am to 8am, where there will be a handout of helmets, gloves, skates and sticks. This will be followed by an on-ice session between 8am and 9am. From 9.30am to 10.30am, a session of off-ice hockey will commence after which certificates will be handed out to participants.

Entrance to the cool and fun-filled day will be free.
