ESP Piranhas excel at OR Tambo Socini Games
The games were introduced to encourage young talent.
ESP Piranhas had 11 swimmers selected this year to represent three competing provincial teams at the annual OR Tambo Socini Games.
Six teams took part and invitational events were added to the programme to showcase the more elite Aquatic Gauteng swimmers and their Socini counterparts.
The games were introduced to encourage young talent, giving them a chance to compete in a “games” challenge. The games were initiated in the celebration of the 100th birthday of OR Tambo.
The Ekurhuleni selection included Danika Brechenmacher, Christopher Gillespe, Mosidi Kgaswe, Oyama Malaza, Ona Matli, Oratile Ndawo, Graham Peacock and Christina Pon.
Mikayla Pon swam for Gauteng Schools and Bernelee Doster and Joshua Gillespe for the aquatics invitational team.
In the invitational events, Bernelee won two gold medals and Gillespe a silver and bronze.
Medal winners at the games were: Christopher Gillespe (three golds, one silver), Ona Matli (two golds and one bronze), Mikayla Pon (one gold, two silvers and one bronze), Oyama Malaza (one gold and two silvers), Mosidi Kgaswe (one gold, two fourth places).
Gauteng Schools won the games with Ekurhuleni taking second place.
