Highlands Park ended their three-game losing streak when they registered a hard-fought 1 – 0 victory against the stubborn Limpopo-based Baroka FC.
Braving the scorching sun on Saturday afternoon at the Makhulong Stadium, the home team put up a brave fight from the beginning of the game until the final whistle.
Coming to this game, coach Owen Da Gama was forced to make some changes to his normal starting 11 due to injuries.
He brought back keeper Marlon Heugh, Mlungisi Mbunjana, Sello Motsepe and Mokete Mogaila, and their presence made a huge difference on the day.
Even though the first stanza didn’t produce any goals, it sure produced entertainment and good football all round.
Highlands Park finally broke the dead-lock in the second half through defender Bevan Fransman, who jumped above the rest and stole a winner for Da Gama’s boys.
This victory has seen the home team climbing back to the eighth spot on the Absa Premiership table with 26 points.
They are just a point behind seventh on the table Golden Arrows and sixth placed Maritzburg United who both have 27 points.
“I believe this is the break we have been waiting for. This win will surely prove to our supporters just how much we want to fight for such results and finish the season within the top eight teams so we can participate in the MTN Top 8 competition just like we did when this season opened,” said Highlands Park spokesman Sibonelo Ngidi.
He said the team would do with more support especially now as the season is getting closer to a finish.
“We need support, especially when playing at home, closer to our supporters. We are playing again this weekend in the Nedbank Cup and the team is going to need support to qualify through to the next round. So please come one, come all and fill up Makhulong Stadium,” said Ngidi.
