Lions of the North tame Amakhosi at Makhulong Stadium
Highlands Park send Chiefs packing.
Highlands Park will go down history lane as giant slayers following their famous victory against log leaders Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday afternoon at the Makhulong Stadium.
The Lions of the North, who are gradually becoming cup specialists, achieved the unthinkable when they eliminated Kaizer Chiefs out of the Nedbank Cup.
This victory has placed the home team right at the top and has just gotten a page into history books by knocking out both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs from a cup competition in just one season.
Highlands Park first caught the football fraternity by surprise when they booted out Orlando Pirates from the MTN8 competition.
And to prove this was no fluke, they stunned Kaizer Chiefs and sent them packing out of the Nedbank Cup.
Even though they achieved this feat via penalty shootouts, it is still a victory the Highlands Park family welcomed with open arms.
“Credit must go to Chiefs as they played very well. They wanted it as much as we did, but it is not easy at Makhulong Stadium. We are happy that we won and are going through to the next round. We are happy for our supporters,” said Park’s head coach Owen Da Gama.
Highlands Park won this thriller 5-4 on penalties to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.
“I believe the team is on the right track and with time we will mature and graduate into a force to be reckoned with in the Premier Soccer League.
“We have been calling for our supporters to be patient with the team and I am happy that today they are reaping the rewards as we have been playing well and winning important games.
“We would like to applaud all our loyal supporters for rallying behind the team and cheering the boys on even when the chips were down.
“The war is not over yet and the journey still very long, and therefore, I would like to appeal to our supporters to remain loyal and behind the team at all times,” appealed Highlands Park spokesperson Sibonelo Ngidi.
Park will turn their attention to the league as they travel to KwaZulu-Natal for a date with Golden Arrows on Saturday at 3pm.
