Kempton Park Boxing Club has started the year on a high note and has many new members training.
The club performed well in tournaments and championships during 2019 and the highlight was Katlego Khanyisa winning his second South African Championships.
The first tournament of 2020 took place over the past weekend in Orange Farm. Unfortunately, only two boxers from the club secured fights at this tournament.
After having her first fight in 2018, which she won on points, Tsoa Rakotondrazafy again entered the ring on Saturday against Bonita Brown from Booysens Boxing Club in Johannesburg.
Brown was slightly heavier and much taller than the Kempton Park boxer but Rakotondrazafy did not let this deter her as she took the fight to her more fancied opponent. This was a hard-fought battle with both boxers showing excellent boxing skills and after three hard rounds, Rakotondrazafy won a split decision on points.
Okuhle Mlamla started boxing last year and was impressive in winning both his fights on first round knock-outs. On Saturday, he was matched against Messi Ngonza from Fight with Insight Boxing Club in Johannesburg.
Ngonza was a heavy puncher and a good boxer but after a closely contested fight, Mlamla was declared a deserved winner by all three judges.
“Mlamla is 15 years old and has a bright future in boxing,” said coach Peter Armstrong.
New boxers are welcome to join the club. The club trains at Kempton Park Indoor Sport Centre on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6pm to 8pm.
