Local soccer player remains hopeful after injury
“As a young soccer player, I have many aspirations, dreams and goals that I would like to achieve in the future, and I do not see myself giving up.”
Ntokozo Dude owes his love of soccer to Thembisa football legend and former Orlando Pirates star Jerry Sikhosana, who bought him his first pair of soccer boots.
The 18-year-old Khalambazo Section resident described his childhood as humble and a key influence on the growth of his soccer career.
“I began playing soccer when I was only seven years old. Soccer has played a significant role in my career because it has been my escape from all the pain I have endured. It has also helped me deal with losing my parents when I was very young,” Dube said.
He also added that being around renowned soccer players such as Jerry Sikhosana motivated and assured him that following his aspirations can keep him off the streets as well as help him feed his siblings.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns player has played for several soccer teams and tournaments and has received multiple medals in recognition of his efforts on the field, including man of the match and player of the tournament awards in 2018 while with Mamelodi Sundowns and Black Leopards.
“Regardless of the challenges that I have faced, each time I have spent on the field has been extremely memorable. It has contributed to my growth as well as the advancement of my career in a lot of ways because as a young soccer player, I can conduct myself and think like a professional soccer player when I am on the field.”
The centre midfielder has recently suffered an ankle injury while playing for TS Galaxy FC in the 2020 ABC Motsepe League, which has taken a toll on him and resulted in a halt on his soccer career.
Despite this effecting him mentally and emotionally, Dube remains optimistic that his injuries will soon be healed and that his career will soon take a turn for the better.
“Not being able to be on the field and do what I love is the most frustrating experience. My friends and colleagues in the soccer industry are progressing with their careers while I am still recovering from my injuries, but above all, I remain hopeful because the universe works in mysterious ways. I am recovering well at home and will be back in the field in due time.”
Dube encourages young soccer players who are pursuing their football careers to be hopeful and trust the process and to never let setbacks demotivate them from pursuing their dreams.
“As a young soccer player, I have many aspirations, dreams and goals that I would like to achieve in the future, and I do not see myself giving up. The journey may be filled with obstacles, but I still see myself doing better and becoming one of our country’s most well-known football stars playing for the South African Premier Soccer League.”
