Thembisa Mile hydration stations ensure runners stay refreshed

As participants gear up for the highly-anticipated Thembisa Mile and 10km road race, organisers carefully planned hydration and refreshment stations to ensure every runner remains hydrated throughout the course.

As participants gear up for the highly-anticipated Thembisa Mile and 10km road race, organisers carefully planned hydration and refreshment stations to ensure every runner remains hydrated throughout the course.

There will be three well-stocked water points strategically placed along the 10km route, located at the 3.5km and 7km marks, with a final station at the finish line.

These water stations aim to cater to all participants’ hydration needs and encourage the responsible use of resources.

Water point locations and sponsors:
• Water Point 1 (3.5km) – Sponsored by the City of Ekurhuleni Sports and Recreation Division, will be the first refreshment stop, ensuring runners get the hydration they need early on.
• Water Point 2 (7km) – Lenmed Zamokuhle Private Hospital will sponsor the second station, giving runners another opportunity to rehydrate and re-energize as they approach the final stretch of the course.
• Water Point 3 (finish line) – Switch Energy sponsors the last hydration point at the race’s finish, where participants can recharge after their achievement.

At each water point, 15 to 20 volunteers will provide runners with 150ml plastic sachets of water and energy drinks.

This arrangement guarantees a smooth flow of refreshments and assistance, keeping everyone in high spirits.

Additional amenities
To accommodate participants’ comfort, toilet facilities will be available at each hydration station.

Located just beyond the refreshment areas, these facilities will help ensure runners and volunteers can relieve themselves conveniently.

Organisers remind everyone to use these facilities rather than private gardens or public spaces.

Responsible hydration practices
To maintain a clean race environment, the race organisers encourage runners to dispose of litter in the refuse bins or boxes provided at each water point.

At the finish line, participants will receive a 500ml bottle of Switch Energy Sports Drink and 500ml bottled water, allowing them to rehydrate and replenish their energy levels.

The well-prepared hydration strategy was designed to support participants’ health and performance, making this year’s Thembisa Mile a safe, enjoyable, and eco-conscious event.
