Former EXPRESS journo sings her way to the stars

TUMELO 'Melo' Mthethwa is releasing her new song 'Naledi' tomorrow.

FORMER EXPRESS journalist and Birch Acres resident Melo is singing her way to the stars.

Tumelo ‘Melo’ Mthethwa kick-started her new year with some inspiration and encouragement – all musically wrapped up in a song.

The Motswako Soul artist is geared to give South Africa, and the world, a taste of her smooth, melodic and unique sound as she releases her inspirational single fittingly titled ‘Naledi’, which means star in her home language Setswana, on Friday (February 10).

“The song is written to remind each person that they are a star, created to find their purpose and shine bright,” the 30-year-old said about her song.

“People seldom reach their highest potential because they either give up on their dreams or they are too afraid to even take the first step towards their dreams. ‘Naledi’ therefore serves as a reminder that we each have a dream that we need to protect and attain,” she added.

‘Naledi’ is sure to set you on a journey of self-realisation, self-love and self-motivation.

It is Melo’s quirky and soulful sound that makes her stand out. Her music, self-termed Motswako Soul, is a combination of Setswana and English lyrical poetry on a soulful and jazzy melody.

Born in Mafikeng, she is not only a singer, but pianist, philanthropist, entrepreneur and songwriter.

Her ability to play the piano while she sings adds a distinct touch and flavour that makes up the ‘Melo’ brand and image.

Melo performs with a five-piece band which includes three members from the talented group Jazz Meloz.

Her first single ‘Thato’, a glamorous township tale of love, was released in 2014.

She is currently working on her debut album which is set to be released later this year.
