First ever international jazz festival in Soweto
The four-day festival is not only limited to jazz but also includes soul, contemporary and African music

SABC Radio will be the media partner of the first ever Soweto International Jazz Festival.
The festival will take place from June 14-17 at the Johannesburg Theatre Group’s state of the art Soweto Theatre Festival Complex.
This festival is dedicated to the historical region of Johannesburg and each day of the festival will have its own theme, namely Celebration of Our Future, Power of Women, International Night and Inspiration, respectively.
SAFM, Metro FM, Lesedi FM, Radio 2000, Channel Africa and Ukhozi FM are the six SABC radio stations that will be dedicating their resources towards promoting the festival and unpacking the themes as part of live broadcasts and interviews.
The four-day festival is not only limited to jazz. The line-up comprises multi-genres such as soul, contemporary and African music. To broaden the horizon and scope, Grammy Award winning artists in the likes of Third World, Bob James, Deborah Cox, Spyro Gyra and the Neville Brothers will grace the stage.
South African Jazz and R&B stars such as Ernie Smith, Zama Jobe and legendary Charlie Wilson will perform alongside gospel artist Khaya Mthethwa. To add a youthful flavour to the festival, local artists such as Nasty C, Lady Zamar, Major League DJs and many more will also be featured in the line-up.
The celebrations will be centred around a tribute to the late legendary jazz musician Hugh Masekela and the centenary of the late former president Nelson Mandela. Tickets are available online at www.sowetotheatre.com. Tickets may also be purchased directly from Soweto Theatre.
