The Kruger National Park is a popular spot for locals who want to get away from the bustle and enjoy some time with nature. There are a total of twenty one rest camps and three bush lodges scattered around this pristine two million hectare wildlife sanctuary.
But with any park across South Africa, there are those accommodations that just stand out from the rest. Whether it be the style of accommodation they offer or just the location. Lower Sabie Rest Camp is one of those camps that is lucky enough to offer the best of both worlds.
Positioned north of Crocodile Bridge Gate, Lower Sabie Rest Camp is surrounded by vast open plains that stretch over hills and ridges, making for the most incredible views. But the areas greatest asset is the Lower Sabie River, which is the main water source for wildlife inhabiting this region. It is here that you will find the Lower Sabie Rest Camp, with its long walkways and restaurant offering uninterrupted views of the resident crocodiles and hippo baking in the sun.
The accommodation at Lower Sabie Rest Camp is different to the classical rondavel styled camps found elsewhere in the Kruger. The units are spacious with some featuring kitchens and dining areas, and other with large verandas that combine as a cooking area. Some bungalows even command spectacular views of the river.
The favourite accommodation option however remains the safari tents which have each been built on a wooden platform and feature a separate kitchen. These tents offer you a true wilderness feeling and the units on the perimeter, which connect to the restaurant by a walkway, are generally the first to go during the peak periods of the year.
Lower Sabie Rest Camp is one of the best places to see the Big Five, with the elusive leopards and rhino frequently seen in the area. Other species to look out for include serval, genet, porcupine, kudu, giraffe, and warthog. With a dam nearby, guests to Lower Sabie Rest Camp enjoy sightings of wildlife and magnificent sunsets.
Lower Sabie Rest Camp offers its guests the option to self drive or book guided bush walks and game drives, bush dining experiences, and visit a bird hide – a great spot for keen birders.
