UPDATE: Five in court for murder

Five foreign nationals who were arrested following the death of two men who were beaten and locked in a refrigerator in Giyani appeared in court on Thursday.

The suspects, Ishmail Patel (45), Sarfaraz Modan (25), Sufiyan Ishmail (34), Ishmail Chandiya (46) and Bashirbhai Pateel (34) who are facing murder and attempted murder charges were remanded in police custody until June 30.

It is alleged that the trouble started when three men entered a shop with fake receipts and wanted to take groceries. After the shop owners realized that the men were in possession of fake receipts, they allegedly beat them before locking them in a refrigerator.

Giyani police spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Thomas Makhubele said one of the men died inside the fridge while the other one died in hospital and the remaining one is in critical condition in local hospital.

On Wednesday night angry residents went on rampage setting alight a hardware store and adjacent shops owned by foreign nationals.

Police investigations are continuing.
