Women police operation a success in Tzaneen

Eighteen suspects were arrested, 692 motor vehicles searched and 84 traffic summons issued during "Operation Basadi" in various areas of the Tzaneen Cluster last Friday.

Female police officers teamed up with the Traffic Department officers in the seven policing areas of the Tzaneen cluster in a bid to root out crime in the community.

The SAPS took on the streets tracing suspects wanted for specific crime, which included stop and search activities and roadblocks.

The traffic police erected roadblocks at specific points and checked for general road worthiness of vehicles and driver fitness, also emphasizing road safety and also educate and encourage drivers to keep safe on the roads.

“The search conducted in the Tzaneen cluster stopped and searched a total of 692 motor vehicles and issued 84 traffic summons,” said Major General Maggie Mathebula, “82 packets of dagga were found and 18 suspects were arrested for possession of dagga.”

“Two vehicles were suspected as stolen and one was impounded and two shebeens were closed down, one person was arrested for robbery with a weapon either than a firearm and the other for assault with the intent to do cause grievous bodily harm.” added General Mathebula.

Pamphlets educating the community on breaking the silence on sexual abuse and domestic violence were distributed during the operation.
