Police launch safer school campaign
The Tzaneen police cluster has embarked on an ongoing, safer school campaign which involves two visits a week around Tzaneen.
Police are visiting schools from its seven cluster which consist of Maake, Lestitele, Mokwakwaila, Ritavi, Bolobedu, Tzaneen and Modjadji to teach learners about school safety.
Last week the police visited Gwabeni secondary school, where a learner killed a fellow schoolmate and they also visited Phusela high school in Lenyenye township after concerns of safety at the school.
“I called the police because some learners smoke dagga during school time and sell it in the toilets,’said Bernard Lestoalo, principal of Phusela high school.
The campaign includes searching of classrooms and learners school bags for dangerous objects, alcohol, drugs and it also involves educational talks which are done by Major General Maggie Mathebula.
“We have embarked on this campaign to ensure safer environment conducive for learning and about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse,”said Sergeant Yvonne Moyana.
Moyana added that the message the police are trying to convey is that crime does not pay and learners must stay away from criminal activities.
