Gauteng man arrested for possession of deadly weapons

Police in Tzaneen have arrested a 26 year-old man from Gauteng and confiscated some deadly weapons, explosives, bullet proof vests, police uniform, copper cables and a luxury car at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the man was arrested during a joint police operation and was found in possession of three deadly R5 rifles, seven R5 rifle magazines, explosives, copper cables, the South African Police Service jersey and a Mercedes Benz which was hijacked in Kempton Park in the Gauteng Province.

Ngoepe said the man was also found with the South African National Defense Force, the South African Police Services, the Department of Correctional Services and a private security company issued bullet proof vests.

The man was due to appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and suspected stolen goods at the time of going to press.

Ngoepe said the man has been linked to various cases of car hijacking and armed robberies in Gauteng Province. Police investigations are continuing.
