PHALABORWA: Woman dies after accident on R71

The driver avoided a head-on collision and drove off the road, which led to him losing control of the vehicle and it overturned.

An elderly woman believed to be 83-years-old, died today, May 21, after the vehicle she was travelling in, overturned on the R71 between Phalaborwa and Gravelotte.

According to information supplied by the Limpopo spokesperson for Department of Transport, Matome Moremi the possible cause of the accident was due to reckless driving.

“The driver of Volkswagen Polo sedan overtook on the barrier line and realised that there was oncoming traffic. He avoided the head-on collision and drove off the road, which led to him losing control of the vehicle and it overturned,” stated Moremi.

He further mentioned that the driver suffered minor injuries, but sadly, the passenger was declared dead on the scene.
