Origin of MiTreasure:Â
When asked about the origin of MiTreasure, the company’s Director in Marketing and Business Development, Blessing Simango had the following to say: “MiTreasure is a brainchild of our usual brainstorming sessions. We cannot really attribute it to any particular individual.”
The founders of MiTreasure set out to develop a mechanism to help victims of theft after they went through experiences of having their gadgets stolen.
It was having to face the reality of losing their items for good due to an inability to produce the gadgets’ serial numbers or boxes to prove ownership that prompted them to kick-start their initiative.

The managing director, Precious Maake told the LETABA HERALD that their app is a product of Digital Treasure South Africa and that it is not a tracking device but much rather a crime prevention tool.
“The idea is to allow verification from all angles, so calls can be made too to MiTreasure in this regard. Whoever uses the MiTreasure app can get notified of stolen items and because it will be in easy access to people, it will increase the effectiveness of our job and help us reach our aim of helping people who are victims of theft. The best part of it is that you can report suspected stolen items anonymously too,” stated Maake.

The company will be working with the police to help ensure such effectiveness of crime prevention and also reduce having to go through a process of people having their treasured items auctioned off due to inability to provide serial numbers to stolen items.
Maake also stated that the app is a way of trying to get people in the hang of not doing anything in a hurry, more especially in terms of buying goods from people without verification of whether or not they are stolen goods.

The app will be launched on Thursday, May 30 where agents working for MiTreasure will be deployed in towns around Limpopo to help inform more people about the app and what it does.
Registrations are R30 per gadget that is linked to your ID through MiTreasure.
This fee is once off and the gadgets that will be registered will be kept on a database to which, if a gadget is sold by the owner, then the app can also be used to transfer ownership of that gadget.
