Masango conquers Lesotho’s tough mountains

Tzaneen adventurer, Nyiko Masango, once again participated in the annual Moshoeshoe Walk in Lesotho recently.

The walk covers a total of 116km in three days. The hikers start from Menkhoaneng and end at Thaba Bosieu.

The walk commemorates the legacy of the King of Basotho and the objective is to rekindle a spirit of unity among the Basotho people as embodied in the legacy left by its founder, Moshoeshoe.

Masango managed to finish the hike without any injuries, unlike last year, when he had to take time out on the second day, because of injured feet.

“This year I managed to complete the walk from start to finish because I had the right shoes.

Last year, I struggled on the second day,” Masango explained.

This year, Lesotho’s King Lestie together with Queen Masenate, led the walk. On the second day the king was not available, but joined them again on the last day.

The trail is not an easy one, it requires endurance and a strong mental will.

It entails climbing and crossing rivers, says Masango.

“The reason I keep going on these walks is because I love it.

It has a level of fulfillment and it is every hiker’s dream to walk a long trail,” he added.

The annual hike attracts people from all over Southern Africa, including Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Botswana.

Last year this adventure junkie cycled from Tzaneen to Tanzania and summited Mount Kilimanjaro afterwards.
