Hampers to welcome babies

The daughter of Greater Tzaneen Municipality's mayor (GTM) visited Van Velden Hospital to welcome the New Year's babies on January 1.

Vivian May is the first-born daughter of GTM mayor, Gerson Molapisane. She presented the mothers with hampers with baby essentials such as pacifiers, bottles, and clothing. Babies born at Letaba Hospital and Dr. C.N Phatudi Hospital were also fortunate to receive hampers which were handed to hospital representatives to distribute to the newborns.

May was accompanied by GTM councillors, the head of special programmes, Maggie Makwala, and the chairperson of special programmes, Makoma Morwasetla. Public health facilities in Tzaneen welcomed a total of 17 babies on the day. Letaba Hospital had nine babies, four girls, and five boys; while Dr. C.N. Phatudi had six newborns. Meanwhile, Carlotta Clinic at Burgersdorp village welcomed one girl and Van Velden Hospital one boy.

In total 43 babies, 19 boys and 24 girls were born in the hospitals in the Mopani District Municipality. According to the Department of Health, the total of 43 deliveries includes nine teenage mothers aged between 15 and 17 years. These teens gave birth at Letaba Hospital. For the entire province, a total of 215 babies were delivered on New Year’s day in 2022, 107 boys and 108 girls, with 24 teenage mothers. In 2023 a total of 193 babies were delivered on New Year’s Day, 27 less than compared to last year.
