Local municipalities represented at AMEU’s Limpopo branch meeting
Municipalities in Mopani attended the Limpopo branch meeting of the Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities (AMEU)on Thursday, February 23, and Friday, February 24.
Thomas Chabalala from Greater Letaba Municipality said that they have ten projects for the financial year. “Of the 10, we have two which are almost completed and the remaining eight are in the construction phase.” He said their challenge is the approval of designs and delays when it comes to submitting the designs. “However, we have come up with a solution to appoint a panel of consultants to do the designs for the upcoming year’s projects.

“We have also asked for clarity from the national treasury as to why they said that we did not spend up to 40%, but on our report, we have spent more than 40%,” he said. Eric Baloyi from Greater Giyani Municipality said that they have completed the lighting of towns the project, one of six projects for the year. “Some projects are awaiting Eskom’s approval,” he said. He added that they are ready to allocate work to consultants when the new financial year starts of which one is two ‘Welcome to Giyani’ signs.
He said the streetlight project was completed last month. “We had some challenges because of cable theft,” he said. Bheki Tshawe from Greater Tzaneen Municipality said that they are currently building the Modjadjiskloof line. He said they have also applied to DESA to build a control room to assist with the implementation of load shedding.
