Giyani Muni offers debt relief discounts to residents

Greater Giyani Municipality aims to help residents settle outstanding accounts and access essential services with flexible payment options.

LIMPOPO – The Greater Giyani Municipality is extending an invitation to all residents with outstanding municipal debts to take advantage of a special programme designed to help them settle their accounts.

As part of this initiative, the municipality is offering substantial discounts to individuals who come forward to resolve their debts, providing a unique opportunity for financial relief and a fresh start.

“This programme is part of the municipality’s commitment to fostering a sense of community responsibility and ensuring that residents can enjoy essential services without the burden of debt,” explained Greater Giyani Mayor Thandi Zitha.

“By settling their accounts, residents not only clear their financial obligations but also contribute to the municipality’s ability to deliver improved services, such as water, sanitation, and waste management,” she said.

According to her, the initiative aims to give residents the chance to start the new year debt-free, offering flexibility regardless of their current financial situation. Whether they owe a small amount or a large sum, the municipality encourages them to visit their revenue offices to discuss settlement options.

“Even if you feel you cannot afford to pay your debt in full, you may be surprised to find that the discounts and payment arrangements available could make clearing your account achievable,” explained the mayor.

Zitha said the programme is ongoing and there are no strict deadlines, allowing residents the convenience of visiting the revenue offices at any time to enquire about their options. He said the municipality assures everyone that no debt is too big to handle, thanks to a range of flexible payment solutions tailored to accommodate different financial circumstances.

The decision comes in the wake of the municipality’s ongoing failure to generate sufficient revenue for consecutive years. During last year’s budget meeting, the challenge of inadequate revenue collection was highlighted as a critical issue where the municipality has struggled to make meaningful progress.

This persistent shortfall is attributed to residents who, for various reasons, appear reluctant to pay for their municipal services, further compounding the financial strain on the municipality.

Residents are therefore urged to take this opportunity to settle their debts to help stabilise the municipality’s finances.

“Clearing your debts not only benefits you as an individual but also strengthens the municipality’s ability to serve the community faster and more effectively,” she added.
