Limpopo man rises from small village to earn PhD
Dr Sydney Shikwambana overcame adversity to achieve a PhD, proving that background does not define success.
TZANEEN – Former Bonn village resident Dr Sydney Shikwambana’s journey is an inspiring example of resilience and determination.
Growing up outside Letsitele, his childhood was marked by challenges, including being raised by a single mother after his father left when he was only a week old.
Despite these hardships, his story is one of triumph over adversity, fuelled by the unwavering support of his family and the power of education.
When Shikwambana matriculated in 2005, he faced a painful setback when his father returned briefly but failed to support his university ambitions, leaving him heartbroken. “He counted out R4 700, saying he had money. But then left without giving me a cent.”
However, his aunt, Ponani Patience, stepped in, providing the funds for his registration at the University of Limpopo.
Even then, he encountered another hurdle: losing his spot due to late registration.
Refusing to give up, he pursued a foundation year course, which eventually paved the way for his success.
Shikwambana completed his BSc in Agriculture (Soil Science) in 2010, followed by a master’s degree in 2015, and most recently, a PhD in Environmental Health from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
Along the way, he drew strength from key supporters like Kokwana Violet Mathonsi, Mhanitsongo Thern Nghamuni, and others who believed in him.
Reflecting on his journey, Shikwambana acknowledges the role of mindset in overcoming challenges. “We are not victims of our circumstances, but rather of our thoughts,” he shared, emphasising the importance of perseverance and self-belief.
Now a deputy director at the Acting Department of Agriculture, in SALA 70 of 1970 section, Land and Soil Management Directorate. He continues to dream big, pursuing a law degree at Unisa.
Shikwambana’s story is a testament to the fact that one’s background does not determine one’s future. His resilience and determination serve as a beacon of hope for anyone striving to rise above adversity.
