Bushwise wins Empowerment Award for tourism

Bushwise, based near Hoedspruit, wins big at the Africa Travel Indaba for its inclusive tourism and safari guide training efforts.

LIMPOPO – Bushwise was honoured with the Empowerment Award at the Africa Travel Indaba, held in Durban from May 13 to 15. The award recognises individuals and organisations making a meaningful impact in tourism and guiding.

Nikita Coetzee, Bushwise’s senior copywriter and media liaison, said the award acknowledges the organisation’s commitment to inclusive, ethical tourism.

“We’re proud to be recognised for our work. Through our Ranger Academy NPC, developed in partnership with Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, we’ve supported candidates from underserved communities in completing their safari guide training and entering the industry,” she said.

Bushwise director Eugene Relling described the win as a proud moment for the entire Bushwise team and their partners.

“This award affirms our belief that true conservation and authentic tourism flourish when local communities are at the centre. The Sabi Sabi Ranger Academy was created to break barriers and open real opportunities for those from disadvantaged backgrounds,” he told the Herald.

Relling emphasised that the initiative goes beyond skills training; it’s about empowerment, community upliftment, and job creation.

“We aim to see our graduates in permanent, fulfilling roles, not only as professional guides but as ambassadors for both wildlife and their communities. This recognition motivates us to grow the program, deepen partnerships, and continue pushing for a more inclusive and representative tourism sector.”

While Bushwise has received multiple accolades over the years, Relling said their success is not measured by awards.

“Our true impact is seen in the journeys of our students. Seeing them thrive in meaningful roles in tourism and conservation around the world is our greatest achievement,” he concluded.
