Young rugby star meets hero Bryan Habana
Seventeen-year-old rugby talent Blessing Mnisi meets Bryan Habana, gaining inspiration for his dreams of playing for the Springboks.
PHALABORWA – Seventeen-year-old rising rugby star Blessing Mnisi recently experienced a dream come true, meeting one of his lifelong idols, South African rugby legend Bryan Habana.
Mnisi, who grew up in the Eastern Cape but whose family now lives in Phalaborwa, described the encounter as “life changing”.
Born in 2007, the same year Habana helped lead the Springboks to Rugby World Cup victory, Mnisi only discovered who Habana was in Gr 1. “We were told to wear Springbok T-shirts to school, and that’s when I started following him,” he said.
Currently in Gr 11, Mnisi plays as a lock and flanker for Table View High School in Cape Town, where he attends school during the term and returns to Phalaborwa during holidays.
He was named best player of the year at his school last year and dreams of one day donning the green and gold for the Springboks and playing for the Stormers.
Mnisi recently had a rare opportunity to sit down with Habana and ask him questions about his journey, work ethic, and mindset.
“My biggest takeaway was when Bryan said that luck, chances, hard work, and resilience all go together,” Mnisi said. “He also told me to remove all distractions and start focusing on myself, my game, and my studies. He made me realise how important it is to be intentional about how I use my time – starting from the moment I wake up.”
Inspired by the advice, Mnisi says the meeting gave him renewed motivation to improve both on and off the field.
His mother, Faith Mpenyana, expressed her pride in her son.
“I’m overwhelmed with pride seeing my son meet his lifelong hero. Blessing has admired Bryan Habana since the age of seven, when he first picked up a rugby ball at Lilyfontein Adventure School in the Eastern Cape. It’s truly heartwarming to see him so inspired. As a mother, it’s incredible to witness his passion and drive,” she said.
