Sanparks confirms Kruger’s white lion is healthy

At 11-years-old, Casper is the last surviving male of his coalition. Sanparks confirms his injuries were from a lion fight, and that he is alright.

LIMPOPO – Sanparks has reassured the public that Casper, the iconic white lion of the Kruger National Park, is healthy and not suffering from any serious illness.

Concerns arose after photos and videos of Casper with a swollen face and an injured mouth circulated on social media. Some speculated that he might have contracted anthrax or been bitten by a snake. The footage, taken in the Satara area, showed him walking alone with visible wounds.

Anthrax is a rare but serious bacterial disease found naturally in soil, primarily affecting animals but occasionally transmitted to humans through contact with infected animals, contaminated products, or inhaled spores.

According to Sanparks spokesperson JP Louw, there is no cause for alarm.

“Casper was located and examined, and both anthrax and a snake bite were ruled out. He is in good condition. The injuries above his right eye and on his mouth are consistent with a bite from another lion, which caused the infection and swelling,” Louw said.

At 11 years old, Casper is considered an elder among wild male lions, which rarely live beyond 12 years. Lionesses can live up to 16 years.

He is the last surviving male from a once-powerful coalition of four brothers, two of whom have already died. The coalition’s territory has since been taken over by two younger, stronger males in the Satara region.

Casper’s distinctive white coat is the result of a rare recessive gene that causes loss of pigmentation in his skin and fur, making him a prized and unique sighting in the Kruger National Park.
