AfriForum Phalaborwa boosts safety at retirement home

AfriForum and residents install over 30 solar lights at Bougainvilla Park to curb crime, with next steps focused on strengthening perimeter security.

PHALABORWA – AfriForum Phalaborwa, in partnership with residents of Bougainvilla Park, an old-age and retirement home, has embarked on a safety improvement project aimed at reducing crime and restoring security in the area.

The initiative officially began on October 30, with the installation of poles for solar-powered streetlights around the complex. The team plans to install more than 30 solar lights as part of the first phase of the project.

Solar lights installed to curb crime

According to AfriForum, the initiative was launched following growing safety concerns among senior citizens residing at Bougainvilla Park. Over the past few years, the area has experienced an increase in criminal activity, including theft and vandalism, while financial constraints have limited the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality’s ability to maintain infrastructure at the facility.

“Senior citizens at Bougainvilla Park have been plagued by increasing crime for years. Numerous vehicles and other property have been stolen or damaged. When residents reached out to us for assistance, we felt compelled to help our vulnerable seniors as much as possible,” said a representative from AfriForum.

He highlighted that during discussions with the retirement home’s board members, two main issues were identified: non-functional streetlights that left many blind spots, and a deteriorating perimeter fence caused by rust and lack of maintenance. These conditions contributed to unsafe conditions, particularly at night.

“Over the last few years, nine vehicles have been stolen, with another incident occurring just weeks ago. Fortunately, the vehicle was recovered,” he added.

Community, businesses rally behind project

Bougainvilla Park was selected for the project not only because of its security concerns but also because of its historical and emotional significance to the community.

“Bougainvilla Park has been an iconic institution of love, hard work, and peace, a haven for retired citizens. It has always been close to the hearts of Phalaborwa residents,” he said.

The project has received generous support from local businesses. PLC Sales and Trade contributed more than 30 solar lights, while Letaba Wireless donated poles for the installations. AfriForum expressed its gratitude to all businesses and individuals who have supported the project so far.

Next phase to reinforce perimeter fence

Moreover, AfriForum emphasised that the initiative is far from complete. The next phase will focus on repairing and strengthening the park’s fence to further enhance safety.

“Making Bougainvilla Park safer is not just a short-term project. We call on the Phalaborwa community, local businesses, and residents to assist, not only financially but also through material and practical support.

“Together, we can protect this treasured part of our town and ensure a safer environment for our seniors,” Afriforum concluded.
