Bushveld Bender brings racing excitement to Hoedspruit

The Bushveld Bender returns to Klaserie Dam on December 13, offering relay running, mountain biking, kids’ races, and a festive after-party for all.

HOEDSPRUIT – Excitement is building as outdoor enthusiasts, athletes, and families prepare for the upcoming Bushveld Bender, a unique relay-style running and mountain biking event taking place at the scenic Klaserie Dam near Hoedspruit on December 13.

Known for its high-energy atmosphere and inclusive format, the event promises a full afternoon of action, camaraderie, and bushveld adventure.

Events for teams, doubles, and young riders

The Bushveld Bender offers something for every fitness level, from competitive teams and social riders to kids experiencing their first taste of racing fun.

The event features three main categories: Teams race, doubles Race, and the lively kids race. The teams’ race consists of groups of four in a mixed relay format, while the doubles race allows pairs to compete together, sharing both the effort and the excitement.

Young athletes can join in too, with a dedicated u/16 race offering one hour of fast-paced fun. Entry fees range from R250 per person for teams, R400 per person for doubles, and R100 per child for the kids’ category.

Four-hour challenge tests stamina and strategy

The main event unfolds over an impressive four hours, testing the stamina and strategy of each team. Runners will tackle a 1km loop, while MTB bikers take on a 5km circuit, switching out teammates as they decide.

The flexible relay setup allows participants to choose their approach: short, frequent bursts to keep energy high, or longer stints to maintain momentum.

Only one team member is on the track at a time, making timing and coordination key components of the race.

At the end of the event, the total number of laps completed by each team determines the final standings.

The day kicks off with check-in from 13:30 to 14:30, followed by the main race start at 15:00. The kids’ race begins earlier at 13:30. The action continues until 19:00.

Family fun with food stalls and after-party

The Bushveld Bender is as much a social gathering as it is a sporting event, with an after-party celebration awaiting all participants and spectators.

The venue will come alive with music, a beer tent, food stalls, and family-friendly activities. An official awards ceremony will honour the top teams, while the relaxed atmosphere invites everyone to unwind, celebrate, and swap stories from the track.
