Tzaneen business chamber tackles rising property rates

Property rates, service delivery and infrastructure dominated the Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce luncheon as members discussed issues affecting local businesses.

TZANEEN – Property rates took centre stage at the recent Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Tzaneen Country Lodge.

Chamber reflects on 2025 achievements

Chamber chairperson Naomi Excell opened the event by reflecting on the organisation’s 2025 achievements.

These included the annual awards ceremony in February, which honoured members of the public and local businesses that contribute significantly to the well-being of the town and its business sector.

Road upgrades and security improvements shared

Excell also highlighted the success of the Green Keepers Revenge golf fundraising event, which helped raise money for security cameras installed between Hoedspruit and Haenertsburg.

These cameras are strategically positioned to support security companies and the police in tracking criminal activities and have already played a key role in helping authorities apprehend suspects.

She further reported that the chamber recently met with Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, Ernest Rachoene MEC to discuss local roads such as Georges Valley and the Eiland roads.

“We are pleased to announce that the MEC indicated that rehabilitation of the Eiland road will begin in November, and that potholes in Georges Valley have been filled, making it much more drivable now,” Excell said.

Tzaneen Country Lodge marks 25 years

The chamber also celebrated the 25th anniversary of Tzaneen Country Lodge.

Owner Adri Kruger shared insights into her business journey and noted that it took perseverance and learning from mistakes to reach this milestone.

Expert unpacks property rates and tariffs

The main speaker of the day, Christo Bester from Sakeliga, delivered an informative presentation on property rates and how municipalities determine tariffs.

He encouraged residents to familiarise themselves with municipal charges and to contact the municipal manager if they wish to dispute any billing issues.

Chamber member Flip Coetzer added that the chamber remains committed to ensuring municipalities deliver basic services and intervening where challenges arise.

He emphasised that achieving a functional town is possible when residents work together.

The event was sponsored by Letaba Crushers. Excell concluded by encouraging Tzaneen business owners to join the chamber next year. For more information, call 083 280 9723 or visit www.tzaneenchamber.org.za
