How to cross to Mozambique via Kruger

A guide to travelling from Limpopo to Mozambique through Kruger National Park, including border rules, gate times and essential documents.

LIMPOPO – Travelling from Limpopo to Mozambique through the Kruger National Park offers a scenic alternative to busy border posts, but it comes with strict rules, set gate times, and documentation requirements.

Here’s a practical guide for anyone planning a route through the Kruger this holiday season.

The Giriyondo and Pafuri border posts form part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a cross-border partnership between South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, aimed at promoting conservation-based tourism.

For many holidaymakers, these routes offer a quieter and more scenic alternative to busy borders such as Lebombo, but they come with one major condition: you may not use either border without proof of an overnight booking inside Kruger or Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park.

This compulsory stay must be directly before or after the day you plan to cross. Without documentary proof, SANParks will turn travellers away.

Border hours are strict, and missing them means an enforced overnight stay.

Giriyondo (KNP to Limpopo National Park)
  • Open 08:00–16:00
Pafuri (KNP to Mozambique)
  • Open 08:00–16:00 year-round
  • Visas can be purchased only on the Mozambican side

Because both posts are inside protected areas, travellers cannot arrive late and attempt to rush through. Instead, late arrivals are redirected to the nearest rest camp to stay the night.

Kruger’s own gate times also apply. To reach either border, you must also pass through Kruger’s main entrance or camp gates during their seasonal hours.

These are the open hours in December:

  • Entrance gates: 05:30–18:30
  • Camp gates: 04:30–18:30

Late-entry escorts are available at these gates:

  • Skukuza
  • Pretoriuskop
  • Berg-en-Dal/Malelane
  • Crocodile Bridge
  • Punda Maria
  • Orpen

But not at Phabeni, Phalaborwa or Pafuri.

Travellers entering from the outside must calculate their drive time inside the park so they reach the border before it closes. SANParks emphasises that no driving is permitted after gate closing times.

Expect slow driving conditions inside the parks

Approximate minimum travel times:

  • Phalaborwa Gate to Giriyondo: ±95 km or about 2h15 min
  • Giriyondo to Massingir (Mozambique): ±75 km or about 2h

Once inside Mozambique’s Limpopo National Park, roads are sandy, narrow and slow. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, and after heavy rains, a 4×4 is essential.

The Giriyondo route is open only to light vehicles. No commercial traffic, trucks or vehicles exceeding a four-ton axle load are permitted.

Things to note in Limpopo National Park

  • Roads can be difficult; a GPS is strongly recommended
  • Signboards are limited
  • Expect livestock and pedestrians on the road

Passports, vehicle papers and insurance are essential

To cross into Mozambique, travellers must have:

  • Passport valid 6 months beyond your return date.
  • Original vehicle registration papers.
  • If the vehicle is financed: letter of authority from the bank.
  • If it’s not your vehicle: permission letter from the owner.
  • Trailer/boat registration documents.
  • Compulsory Mozambican third-party insurance.
  • Two red emergency triangles.
  • Blue/yellow reflective triangle if towing.
  • Travel insurance recommended.

South African passport holders do not need visas, but many foreign nationals do. The Pafuri post allows visa purchases on the Mozambican side; Giriyondo availability varies, so visitors are encouraged to confirm in advance.

Food limits, customs rules and on-road safety

Mozambique allows each traveller to bring in food worth US$50, or around R850. If the value is exceeded, customs may impose a 46% tax on goods. Certain items, including sugar, salt and some poultry products, are restricted.

You may bring:

  • 1 litre hard liquor
  • 2 bottles of wine
  • 200 cigarettes

For travellers coming from Mozambique

If you are travelling from Maputo toward South Africa:

  • Maputo to Macia: 149 km
  • Macia to Massingir turnoff: 82 km
  • Massingir to Giriyondo: 80 km

Permits must be purchased at Limpopo Park’s offices in Massingir before entering the park.

These routes offer quieter roads, scenic landscapes and a unique way to enter neighbouring countries, but only for travellers who prepare properly.

If you’re heading for the Mozambican coast, understanding the rules ahead of time will save you delays, unexpected overnight stays and costly fines, allowing you to enjoy the journey exactly as intended.
