Namakgale family’s burnt home rebuilt

After a fire destroyed their home, a Namakgale family received a full rebuild through community support, turning despair into hope.

PHALABORWA – When a devastating fire ripped through parts of the five-roomed Mangena family home in Namakgale, Foskor, on September 7, the aftermath left behind charred walls, destroyed belongings, and a family uncertain of where to begin.

Three months later, that scene of loss was transformed into one of overwhelming joy and relief as the Molopa Foundation, in partnership with the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality, officially handed over a fully refurbished home to the family on December 8.

The September blaze, which started in the living room, spread rapidly through several sections of the house and destroyed essential living spaces. While no injuries were reported, the emotional and financial impact on the household was severe, leaving the family in urgent need of assistance.

Mayor calls on foundation for urgent help

Following a visit to the family, the office of Mayor Merriam Malatji reached out to the Molopa Foundation for support. While the initial request was for repainting assistance, the foundation went far beyond that call.

They mobilised skilled workers, resources, and partners to undertake a full refurbishment of the home, ensuring it was restored with dignity, safety, and comfort.

The foundation spent a week assessing the damage before beginning the restoration project.

The extensive refurbishment included repairing damaged sections, replacing materials, repainting the entire house, installing a built-in kitchen unit and wardrobes, and renovating the bathroom.

A transformed home brings hope and relief

The transformation turned what had been a disaster-stricken structure into a brand-new home.

Foundation representative Aldecia Mafokwane said the goal was far more than repairing walls.

“A community is defined by its people, and each of us has a role to play,” she said.

Malatji applauded the Molopa Foundation’s generosity and ongoing commitment to uplifting the community.

“The work undertaken by the Molopa Foundation is significant, and this is not their only project; there is much more they have contributed. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Molopa family,” said Malatji.

The Mangena family expressed gratitude to everyone who assisted them during their time of need, including the Molopa Foundation, the municipality, the Department of Social Development, Sassa, the broader community, and the Phalaborwa Herald for helping spread their call for assistance.
