Haenertsburg: A festive hiking haven

Explore Haenertsburg’s misty mountains, guided hikes, and family-friendly trails as one of Limpopo’s go-to festive hiking destinations.

TZANEEN – Tucked away in the misty mountains of Magoebaskloof, the charming town of Haenertsburg continues to enchant nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Surrounded by lush forests, cool streams, and breathtaking mountain views, it’s no wonder the area has become known as Limpopo’s hiking haven, an ideal destination for families and communities to enjoy this festive season.

Meet Sandi Moore

At the heart of this hiking culture is Sandi Leigh Moore, founder of The Mountain Company and affectionately known as the “Queen Orophile” for her love of mountains.

Since 2010, she has led countless guided hikes and summited Limpopo’s highest peak, Iron Crown, over 60 times.

Standing 2 124 metres above sea level, the peak offers panoramic views of Wolkberg Nature Reserve, Ebenezer Dam, and even the distant Blyde River Canyon.

Sandi’s guided experiences go beyond hiking, blending storytelling, mindfulness, and photography to create what she calls “Nature Hike Therapy Sessions.”

These unique adventures combine grounding exercises, meditation, art therapy, and barefoot walking.

“Our hikes are a digital detox,” she said. “You switch off your devices and reconnect with yourself, others, and the earth.”

Trails for all experience levels

For independent explorers, Haenertsburg also offers two public trails.

The first is the 10 km Louis Changuion Trail (with a 6.5 km shorter option), maintained by Friends of the Haenertsburg Grasslands (FROHG) through donations.

The second is the 4.5 km Swartbos Trail near Magoebaskloof Hotel, an easy, pet-friendly rainforest walk perfect for families.

More seasoned hikers can take on the 55 km Woodbush Reserve Trail from Debengeni Falls, with a R50 permit.

As a FROHG committee member, Sandi reminds visitors to respect nature: “There’s a strict no-littering policy, and anyone caught littering faces a fine.”

From misty mornings to wildflower-filled hillsides, Haenertsburg’s trails promise adventure, serenity, and renewal for everyone this holiday season.
