Tzaneen SAPS launches safer festive season operation

Tzaneen Police launch Safer Festive Season Operation, urging residents to stay alert and take simple steps to prevent holiday crime.

TZANEEN – The Tzaneen Police have officially launched their Safer Festive Season Operation, aimed at ensuring residents and visitors remain safe during the upcoming holiday period.

According to Sergeant Garvey Mathye, the operation focuses on preventing crimes such as house burglaries, robberies, and theft offences that tend to rise during the festive season.

“We urge residents to make sure all doors and windows are properly closed before leaving home. Those with alarm systems must ensure they are activated,” said Mathye.

“Holidaymakers should remain alert at all times and keep a close eye on their belongings.”

The police are also warning the public to avoid overcrowded areas where pickpockets often operate, as well as isolated spots such as passages or quiet hiking trails.

Popular risky areas identified include the R71 hiking spot to Phalaborwa, the NTK hiking trail to Nkowankowa, and Kudu Street near the railway line.

Motorists are reminded to exercise patience on the roads, obey traffic laws, and ensure valuables are not left visible inside vehicles.

At home, residents are encouraged to have dogs or install cameras for extra security, and to participate in community street patrols with the help of Community Policing Forums (CPF).

Mathye further advised the public to use ATMs located inside banks, rather than standalone machines, and to immediately contact the police in the event of suspicious activity or an emergency.

Members of the public can reach the Tzaneen SAPS at 079 890 2424, or use 10111, 112, or the My SAPS app for quick assistance.

“We all have a role to play in keeping our community safe. By working together and staying vigilant, we can ensure a peaceful and crime-free festive season for everyone.”
