The festive-season heroes keeping hospitality running

Meet dedicated hospitality staff working through the festive season to ensure guests enjoy comfort, cleanliness, and warm service.

TZANEEN – While most of us will spend the festive season unwinding with family, sharing meals, and escaping the year’s pressures, there is a dedicated group of men and women who keep our holiday experiences running smoothly.

From preparing rooms to pouring drinks with a smile, these behind-the-scenes heroes work tirelessly to ensure people feel relaxed, welcomed, and at home. At Tzaneen Country Lodge, two such individuals, Patrick Nhlangwana and Virginia Baloyi, embody the true spirit of service during the busiest time of the year.

Patrick Nhlangwana, Barman.

With an impressive 47 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Patrick Nhlangwana has perfected the art of being a barman.

Born and raised in Burgersdorp village, Tzaneen, Nhlangwana began his journey in hospitality back in 1978, while he was still in school. During school holidays and weekends, he worked part-time at a hotel in Gravelotte, where his love for serving people first took root.

After the passing of his father, Nhlangwana was compelled to find full-time work as a teenager to help support his family. As the seventh of eight children, he took on the responsibility of putting food on the table.

Over the years, he has worked in several hotels across Tzaneen, earning a reputation for his friendly demeanour and dedication to excellent service.

In 2001, he joined Tzaneen Country Lodge, where he has since become a familiar and trusted face behind the bar.

Nhlangwana says what he enjoys most about his work is the opportunity to connect with people. “I love my job because I get to meet new people, make friends, and sometimes even serve well-known figures,” he shares.

According to him, patience and respect are key qualities in his line of work. “It’s important to treat people kindly and offer them the best service possible,” he says. “You never know what someone might be going through; sometimes they just need a place to relax and clear their mind.”

A proud father of three, Patrick invites locals and visitors alike to stop by Tzaneen Country Lodge for a refreshing drink and a friendly chat. After nearly five decades behind the bar, his commitment to great service and genuine hospitality continues to shine.

Virginia

Virginia Baloyi, housekeeping manager.

Virginia Baloyi, a housekeeping manager, at Tzaneen Country Lodge, will be hard at work during the Christmas period, making sure guests are well taken care of.

Baloyi is originally from Mhlava Cross, she now lives in Ruanda, Nwamitwa, with her two sons.

Virginia says her passion for cleanliness was inspired by her mother, who also once worked as a housekeeper at the lodge. “My mother taught me to be a clean and organised person from a young age,” she said. “As the firstborn of six children, I was expected to help around the house and do things exceptionally well. Those lessons have carried me through life and my career. I’ve had the honour of serving influential guests, including politicians and celebrities.”

With a business management qualification, Virginia is grateful for the continued support and training provided by the lodge’s management team.

Her mission is clear: to ensure Tzaneen Country Lodge is known for its world-class cleanliness.

When asked what she wishes guests knew, Virginia shared an important reminder. “It’s important for guests to be honest when booking. If there are two adults, they should say so, because it helps us prepare the correct number of soaps, towels, and other amenities. Sometimes it looks like the housekeeper isn’t doing a good job when guests ask for extra items at reception, but that’s only because the system shows one guest instead of two.”
