How a Tzaneen family plans to spend NYE

The Mdaka family are preparing New Year’s Eve celebrations filled with games, traditions, and meaningful moments to welcome 2026 together.

TZANEEN – As the countdown to the New Year nears, families like Lincoln Mdaka’s are getting ready to celebrate with laughter, games, and togetherness at the centre of it all.

Mdaka is a resident of Petanenge Village in Tzaneen. He shared that their family plans to organise a braai with some music to create a joyful atmosphere and play competitive games like spin the bottle and hide and seek.

He said these activities not only bring excitement but also help them engage in competitions that are suitable for children to participate in, which allows them to create memories and gives them a sense of culture.

“This year’s celebration will also have a special theme, symbolising the essence of a new beginning as we would be crossing over to the New Year as a clean slate for the year,” he said.

Mdaka said their decoration would feature colourful Christmas lights resembling disco lights, along with chairs that share the same colour.

As midnight approaches, the family will hand out white balloons when the countdown begins, then release them to signal a New Year and exchange hugs with New Year greetings.

Their New Year’s Eve will feature biscuits, braai meat, juice, and sweets.

For drinks, the family keeps it alcohol-free, serving juices and beverages suitable for both children and teenagers.

Mdaka said food preferences are also discussed beforehand to ensure everyone enjoys.

As the night unfolds, movie and story time sessions will provide a cosy and reflective moment, allowing family members to bond, share memories, and look forward to the year ahead with hope.

Mdaka believes these activities do more than entertain; they strengthen family bonds, promote communication, and create lasting traditions that will be cherished for years to come.
