Limpopo welcomes 106 New Year babies

A total of 106 babies were born in Limpopo hospitals on New Year’s Day, as Health MEC Dieketseng Mashego praised healthcare workers.

LIMPOPO – The Limpopo MEC for Health, Dieketseng Mashego, has welcomed the birth of 106 babies delivered at public health facilities across the province between midnight and midday, marking a hopeful start to the New Year for many families. Of the newborns, 51 were boys and 55 were girls.

The births were recorded at various public hospitals and clinics, highlighting the steady demand for maternal and neonatal services during the festive period.

Warm welcomes for newborns

The MEC congratulated new mothers and their families, while also acknowledging the commitment of healthcare workers who ensured safe deliveries and continued care during a traditionally busy time for health facilities.

As part of the celebrations, Mashego visited Voortrekker Hospital and Jane Furse health facilities, where she met some of the mothers who gave birth on New Year’s Day. During these visits, she welcomed the newborns and presented mothers with gifts as a gesture of support and encouragement.

Support for new mothers

The MEC used the opportunity to promote exclusive breastfeeding, noting its importance in supporting healthy growth, development, and immunity in newborns. She also reassured mothers that healthcare professionals remain available to provide guidance on breastfeeding and postnatal care.

In addition, Mashego called on communities, traditional leaders, faith-based organisations and other stakeholders to work together to protect women and children.

She emphasised the importance of reporting cases of gender-based violence, femicide and the sexual abuse of minors, underscoring the shared responsibility of society in safeguarding vulnerable groups.

The Department of Health has indicated that it will continue prioritising maternal and child health services to ensure that mothers and babies receive the care and protection they need throughout the year.
