WATCH: Tzaneen Dam overflows after days of heavy rainfall
Tzaneen Dam overflows after heavy rains, reaching 104.63% capacity. Residents downstream are advised to remain cautious and vigilant.
TZANEEN – Tzaneen Dam has begun to overflow after several days of persistent heavy rainfall, with water levels reaching 104.63% on Monday.
The continuous downpours across the Greater Tzaneen area have led to a sharp rise in inflows into the dam, resulting in water spilling over the spillway. While the overflow indicates healthy water reserves for the region, it has raised concerns for communities living downstream and in low-lying areas.

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant, as water levels in nearby rivers and streams are expected to continue rising if rainfall persists.
The situation is compounded by the fact that the raising of the Tzaneen Dam wall has not yet been completed. The upgrade project, which aims to increase the dam’s storage capacity and improve long-term water security for the area, is still underway. According to earlier estimates, the construction is expected to be completed by March.
Authorities continue to monitor the dam closely and have assured the public that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
Motorists and residents are advised to exercise caution, especially near bridges, river crossings, and areas prone to flooding, and to follow official updates as the rainy conditions continue.
