Majeje High School netball team opens new court

Majeje High School's netball team launched their own court after securing second place at the Kay Motsepe National Netball Championships.

PHALABORWA –  After years without its own facilities, the Majeje High School netball team now boasts a brand-new court.

The court was officially launched and opened for play on Monday, February 23, in the presence of school management, sponsors, and other stakeholders.

Team manager Sharon Maake told the Herald that the development follows the team’s impressive performance at last year’s Kay Motsepe National Netball Championships in the North-West province, where they secured second place and won R200 000 in prize money.

Following their victory, the school and team management agreed that building a dedicated netball court would be the best investment. However, the total cost of construction exceeded the prize money.

Leolo Community Trust stepped in to cover the remaining balance, enabling the project to be completed. Over the years, the Majeje netball team has won numerous provincial and national tournaments.

Many of the players previously attended Lulekani Primary School, which has also produced award-winning teams.

“Having our own court will give us enough time to practice. We used to train at Lulekani, but the court there was already congested, and we had to take turns. This is a breakthrough for us, as we struggled for years without our own space,” she said.

Maake thanked both Kay Motsepe and Leolo Community Trust for their contributions.

“We are grateful for their support, and we believe that this year, more wins are inevitable,” Maake concluded.
