Phalaborwa Rugby Club shows growth despite defeat
Phalaborwa Rugby Club showed resilience and growth in a competitive 29-17 defeat to Louis Trichardt at James Tolmay Rugby Day in Tzaneen.
PHALABORWA – While Phalaborwa Rugby Club (PRC) 1 fell 17-29 to Louis Trichardt (LTT) 1 this past weekend, the result was less about the scoreboard and more about the significant strides the club has made since last year.
The teams took part in the popular James Tolmay Rugby Day hosted at Letaba Park in Tzaneen.
At halftime, PRC found themselves trailing 5-19, with LTT capitalising on early chances and dominating possession.
However, the second half was a different story.
The Phalaborwa side returned with renewed intensity, a more disciplined defensive structure, and a determination that saw them close the gap to 17-29.
For context, the two teams met in 2025, and PRC suffered a heavy 5-71 defeat.
This year’s performance is therefore a clear indication of the club’s growth, not only in skill but in belief and composure under pressure.
Speaking after the match, PRC’s Ruben Coetzer reflected on the team’s progress.
“This weekend was about more than just the result,” he said.
“Yes, we came up short on the scoreboard, but the way our team responded after halftime shows how far we have come.
“Last year, we were overwhelmed by LTT, but now we are competing, closing gaps, and making it clear that PRC can stand up to the stronger clubs.
“Our players showed resilience, focus, and a real willingness to fight for every point. That’s exactly the kind of mentality we want for this season.”
Coetzer emphasised that the club’s focus is on long-term growth.
“Every training session, every match, is about building consistency and belief,” he said.
“The second half of this game proves that we are heading in the right direction. If we continue to develop, there’s no reason we can’t start turning these strong performances into wins.”
The weekend also saw PRC 2 hold Letaba 2 to a 7–7 draw, despite being reduced to 14 men for a period in the second half.
“Across both teams, the common thread was composure under pressure,” Coetzer added.
“It is encouraging to see our players keeping their heads, even when the odds are against them.”
While victories remain the ultimate goal, this weekend’s matches underscore that PRC is no longer just participating; they are competing.
For Coetzer and his squad, the focus now turns to maintaining this momentum and translating it into results as the league season unfolds.
