Frans du Toit learner elected Mopani East RCL president

Ripfumelo Mathebula of Hoërskool Frans du Toit in Phalaborwa becomes Mopani East RCL president, aiming to empower learners across the district.

PHALABORWA – A Gr 12 Hoërskool Frans du Toit learner, Ripfumelo Mathebula, has been elected president of the Representative Council of Learners (RCL) for the Mopani East Education District.

Mathebula was elected by learner leaders from schools in the Giyani and Phalaborwa areas during a recent district meeting.

Mathebula was first nominated by her school, and after delivering an impressive presentation, she was elected president of the Lulekani Circuit, representing schools in Phalaborwa and the Lulekani area. She then advanced to the district level, where she was elected president.

The district RCL council also includes Dakalo Yola Mulaudzi from Duvula Mahuntsi High School, Vutshila Nkuna from Gawula High School, Kgothatso Malebelela from Abel Secondary School, Ntokoto Rikhotso from Famanda Secondary School, Hlawuleko Hlungwane from Ndhambi High School and Lesego Nkuna from Vuxeni High School.

Mathebula told the Herald that she is honoured to serve as a district leader and is grateful for the support she has received from fellow council members and her school.

“It feels amazing to be given this responsibility. I am overwhelmed by the love and support from my fellow learners and my school,” she said.

Her leadership journey began in July last year when she became involved in school activities that included preaching the gospel and participating in a cancer awareness programme.

Mathebula said her priorities as district RCL president include improving academic performance at schools, particularly those in disadvantaged communities.

“I also want to focus on the well-being of learners, especially mental health. Many learners face peer pressure, emotional stress related to academic performance, and low self-esteem,” she said.

Her mother, Mpho Mathebula, said she is extremely proud of her daughter’s achievement.

“My heart is overflowing with pride and gratitude. It is an honour to see her hard work, discipline and dedication recognised,” she said.

“What makes me even more proud is not just her achievement, but her character. She is respectful, compassionate, and driven to make a positive difference.”
