R2m dagga bust as police arrest 27 in Limpopo
Police arrested 27 people and seized dagga valued at over R2m during Operation Shanela II in Hoedspruit on Friday, March 13.
HOEDSPRUIT – Police have arrested 27 suspects and seized dagga valued at more than R2m during a multi-agency crime prevention operation conducted in the Hoedspruit area.
The arrests were made during Operation Shanela II, a coordinated crime-fighting initiative on Friday, March 13.
The operation, which took place in two phases during the day and overnight, involved members of the SAPS, military police, traffic officials, private security companies, Pro Track, and Farm Watch.
During the daytime operation, officers intercepted a 38-year-old foreign national who had just entered the Hoedspruit CBD while driving a white bakkie. Police searched the vehicle and discovered 22 bags of dagga believed to be Swaziland-grade cannabis (Swazi Gold).
Authorities estimate the street value of the confiscated drugs to be more than R2m. The suspect was arrested for possession of dagga, and the drugs were seized as evidence.
18 undocumented foreigners arrested
The operation continued later with compliance inspections and roadblocks conducted in The Oaks area.
Law enforcement officials targeted immigration violations and traffic offences as part of efforts to clamp down on criminal activity in the area.
During the night operation, police arrested 18 undocumented foreign nationals aged between 21 and 52 for contravening immigration laws.
Officers also arrested eight motorists aged between 27 and 49 for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol following roadside checks along the D21 road near The Oaks.
In addition to the arrests, police issued two fines to individuals for public drinking and indecent behaviour.
All 27 suspects appeared in the Hoedspruit Magistrate’s Court on Monday, March 16.
Multi-agency operation hailed a success
Provincial commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe said the results of the operation highlight the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and local communities in addressing crime.
She commended the collaboration between police, security companies, and community structures that participated in the operation, saying joint initiatives play a crucial role in disrupting criminal activities.
“Strong partnerships between law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders are essential in ensuring safer communities and combating crime effectively,” Hadebe said.
Authorities say similar operations will continue across the province as police seek to curb illegal activities and improve safety in communities.
Police investigations into the seized drugs and related offences are ongoing.
