Greater Giyani Municipality allocates R2.6m for Mayor’s Cup

The annual sporting event continues to grow in popularity, attracting teams and supporters from across the wider Mopani district.

LIMPOPO – The Greater Giyani Municipality has set aside R2.6 million for the 2026 Mayor’s Cup tournament, reinforcing its commitment to youth sports development and talent identification across the municipality.

Flagship tournament continues to grow

The annual tournament has become one of the municipality’s flagship sporting events, drawing participation from all 31 Wards and providing a platform for hundreds of young athletes to showcase their talents.

Over the years, the competition has grown into the largest youth sports development event in the municipality, both in terms of player participation and its ability to attract general football supporters from across the Mopani district and other areas.

Mayor highlights development impact

Presenting the municipality’s 2026/27 budget, Mayor Thandi Zitha said the investment reflects the municipality’s belief in sport as a powerful tool for youth development, social cohesion, and community empowerment.

“It is for this reason that the tournament is going to be here even after I’m gone. Those who will come after me carry on with it as it has a huge impact in terms of promoting sports in the municipality,” said Zitha.

Platform for rising talent

She explained that the Mayor’s Cup has already made a meaningful contribution to the development of local talent, with some participants having gone on to secure opportunities with professional teams.

According to her, the tournament serves as an important steppingstone for aspiring athletes who dream of competing at higher levels.

Growing community support

Zitha further highlighted the growing popularity of the competition, noting that the most recent edition recorded one of the highest spectator attendances in the history of the tournament.

“The tournament has become a huge sports event in our municipality, and the support from communities continues to grow every year,” she said.

Champions recognised

The mayor congratulated the defending champions, praising Makosha Wonder Boys of Ward 14 for winning the men’s football title and Mayor’s Cup, Bonwani Ladies of Ward 20 for claiming the women’s football trophy, and the Queens of Ward 13 for securing the netball title.

She wished success to teams preparing for the upcoming tournament.

Grassroots development focus

She again highlighted the tournament’s role in identifying grassroots talent, crediting councillors and communities for organising local sports activities that nurture future athletes.
