Former Phalaborwa learner headed to USA on scholarship
Determination and talent have opened global doors for a local matriculant who is now preparing to further his studies overseas.
PHALABORWA – Tetlego Monyela (18), a former learner from Maphokwane High School, is proving that determination, faith and hard work can create life-changing opportunities.
Monyela, who completed his matric in 2025, has secured a prestigious scholarship to study in America from August. He will pursue a bachelor’s degree in education, majoring in biology, while continuing his passion for music.
“My goal is to inspire others and show them that everything is possible if you believe in yourself and remain committed to your dreams,” he said.
Academic and cultural excellence
Throughout his school career, he excelled academically and culturally. He was recognised as a top-performing learner, won major spelling bee competitions and represented his school internationally in Botswana through the Kingsley Spelling Bee programme.
His passion for music has also taken him beyond South Africa’s borders. While still in high school, Monyela travelled to Los Angeles to participate in the internationally acclaimed Acapella Academy music programme.

This year marks his third visit to the US. Although his academic ambitions are focused on education, Monyela plans to further his studies to master’s and PhD level before pursuing a music qualification.
Overcoming challenges after matric
Despite achieving an average of 70% in matric and narrowly missing four distinctions, he faced challenges when applying to local institutions and was placed on waiting lists. However, he remained determined.
Since completing matric, Monyela has remained active in music. His talent recently earned him a place as a finalist in the upcoming Lowvelder Media Got Talent competition.
International opportunities and future plans
He has also been selected to participate in a Disneyland Hong Kong talent casting event, where he will audition for the role of Simba.
“God has placed amazing opportunities on my path, and I will never stop praying. My mom has supported me every step of the way, and I am forever grateful,” he stated.
Call for support
Although his scholarship covers a significant portion of his studies, Monyela is asking for assistance to cover his accommodation, travel and medical expenses. Anyone wishing to support him can contact him at 079 273 4339 or 076 013 1501.
