2 Modjadjiskloof cops sentenced for theft
Two cops from Modjadjiskloof have been sentenced after they were caught loading cigarettes from the station's storeroom.
TZANEEN – The Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit has successfully investigated a case involving two SAPS members attached to Modjadjiskloof SAPS.
Sergeant Maenetja Maropeng Ednah and Constable Kgatla Lehlogonolo Lazarus were sentenced in the Tzaneen Regional Court on June 10 after pleading guilty to charges related to the unlawful entry of the station’s storeroom.
How the incident unfolded
It is alleged that on March 20, 2024, the storeroom at Modjadjiskloof Saps was unlawfully entered after it had been secured by a member who was in possession of the keys. Upon inspection, it was discovered that the original lock had been replaced and exhibits, including cigarettes, had been removed.
The investigation revealed that the key holder was informed that an officer and the two accused members had been seen inside the storeroom.
Discovery and case opened
On March 25, 2024, the officer contacted the key holder and reported that there had been a problem at the storeroom, which she had managed to resolve. She later informed the key holder that she had found the two accused loading cigarettes from the storeroom into a police vehicle.
She removed the key and unlocked the padlock, leading to the registration of a case of housebreaking with intent to steal and attempt theft.
Investigation and charges
The matter was referred to the Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for investigation. Following extensive investigations, the matter was presented to the Senior Public Prosecutor in Tzaneen, who directed that the members be charged with:
- Housebreaking with intent to steal and attempted theft
- Malicious damage to property
Court outcome
On June 10, Sergeant Maenetja and Constable Kgatla pleaded guilty and were convicted on both charges.
Both counts were taken as one for sentencing purposes. The court sentenced each accused to four years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on condition that they are not convicted of a similar offence during the suspension period.
Both turned State witnesses
Both accused subsequently turned State witnesses against the officer. The matter against the officer was postponed to July 13 for trial.
