8 years for murder: Giyani man sentenced

A heated argument between two men drinking together at a tavern in Homu 14A village turned deadly when one allegedly stabbed the other with broken glass.

LIMPOPO – A 23-year-old man, Surprise Sibusiso Chuma, has been sentenced to eight years’ direct imprisonment by the Giyani Regional Court for the murder of 21-year-old Makungu Passive Chavalala in Homu 14A village in June 2024.

Argument turns deadly

During the court proceedings, it was heard that the accused and the deceased were drinking alcohol together at a local tavern on June 29, 2024, when a heated argument broke out between them.

The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation, during which Chuma broke an empty bottle and stabbed Chavalala with broken glass.

The police say Chavalala was rushed to Nkhensani Hospital for medical treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, a murder case was opened and assigned to Detective Sergeant Gugulethu Tiyani Manganyi, who led the investigation. Manganyi arrested Chuma two days after the fatal stabbing, paving the way for the criminal case to proceed. Chuma remained in custody for six months before being granted bail of R2 000 as the case continued through the courts.

Eight years for fatal stabbing

On October 7, he appeared in the Giyani Regional Court, where he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to eight years’ direct imprisonment. Following his conviction and sentencing, his bail was forfeited, and he was taken into custody to begin serving his prison term.

The sentence brings an end to more than two years of waiting for justice for Chavalala’s family, who lost their loved one in the fatal incident.

Commenting on the case, Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers welcomed the sentence and commended Manganyi for his dedication to ensuring that the case was thoroughly investigated and successfully brought before the court.
