Michael publishes his first Xitsonga book

32-year-old Michael Makhubele from Nkuri-Tomu village outside Giyani has realised a dream when he published his first Xitsonga book called Byi Vupfile, meaning it is “well-cooked” last week.

“I have been interested in writing since my matric year in 2008.

“My Xitsonga teacher, N J Maluleke, who is also a writer and I admired his teaching and writing which are wonderful to the point.

This inspired me to be an author,” he said. The book is a collection of Xitsonga poems.

“As a village-born person, it feels good to finally have a book of my own,” he said.

“The poems in Byi Vupfile are about our people going about their daily lives, their challenges and also the solutions to those challenges.

The book

It covers themes such as love, behaviour, how to save money, the importance of education and having parents, amongst others.”

The book has been well received by those who have already bought it.

“The fact that he wrote it in his mother tongue makes it enjoyable to read.

It is understandable and also affordable,” said Happy Chauke, a happy reader.

Michael attended Tirhani Primary School in Nkuri-Tomu and did his grade 8 and 9 at Matsambu Secondary.

He then moved to John Mbhedlhe Secondary in Xihosani village where he finished his matric.

“The biggest challenge was to find a publisher and not just a publisher, but one that provides a good support service to ensure quality and that can publish the book at a reasonable price.

He hopes that his book will be recognised as worthy to be used in Xitsonga education.

“His talent is raw and I hope the industry will receive him with open arms because I foresee great things from this man,” said Felicia Rikhotso, another satisfied reader.

An official book launch will be organised for later this year when the pandemic restrictions are lifted.

Books are now only available in Gauteng but will be in Giyani from August 1.
