Centurion teacher arrested after alleged assault on learner

The teacher allegedly strangled and stamped on the learner’s chest after accusing him of stealing a bottle of flavoured water from a fellow learner.

The Gauteng education department is investigating allegations of misconduct against a teacher in Wierda Park, Centurion Rekord reports.

The Springvale Primary School teacher was arrested after allegedly assaulting a grade 6 learner last week.

Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said the parents of the learner filed a complaint with the department and the teacher was later arrested.

The teacher’s identity is yet to be made public.

“The department is currently investigating the circumstances of the incident,” Mabona said.

“There have been similar incidents at the school and charges against the teacher before.”

Wierdabrug police spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma confirmed the arrest.

The school declined to comment saying the case had been handed over to the department.
