A fire broke out this morning in a library at the Durban University of Technology’s ML Sultan campus, Berea Mail reports.

In dramatic footage, students were seen coughing heavily after rushing out of the burning building.

Firefighters also reported to the scene.

Alan Khan, Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at DUT, said the fire has been contained.

The fire had broken out on the ground floor in the server room, said Khan.

“The cause of the fire is currently unknown. The University, along with the Fire Department, are at the scene, investigating the cause of the fire. The University is grateful for the quick response from the Fire Department and from our staff and students in the BM Patel Library,” said Khan.

“The server room, an IT office and the passage to the server room, were damaged. One student, who was reportedly asthmatic, is currently being treated in hospital after inhaling the smoke.”
