Randfontein-W’aria merger a done deal

New municipality to have 35 wards; public urged to suggest a new name.

The municipalities of Randfontein and Westonaria becoming one is a given, the West Rand District Municipality confirmed on Thursday.

According to Dennis Mangope, Executive Mayor spokesperson, “The merger of the two is already a done deal and gazetted in terms of Section 14(5) of the Municipal Structures Act.

“So far Randfontein and Westonaria combined will have 35 wards, which means the newly established municipality will have 35 ward councillors and proportional representatives in line with IEC guidelines.”

Mangope believed this process would help move the Gauteng City Region forward to address the strategic objective of the Gauteng Government to build a strong and efficient City Region and realise the 2055 vision.

“We encourage our communities, schools, organised community organisations and individuals to continue engaging on possible renaming of the new municipality that will emerge from the merger of the two,” Mangope said.
